Get Sulky: seduction of the downtrodden

I’m not a big fan of gambling. Part of me just doesn’t see the merit in risking large sums of money on the odds that the planet will suddenly align and you’ll win multiples of the money you invested. I laugh at how some people delude themselves into believing that “this time will be the winner” time after time and still manage to maintain that optimism through their (numerous) losses.

I found a link to Get Sulky, an initiative to introduce people into the world of horse racing. Goofy name aside, this site features a horse racing game that besides sending you spam when you sign up, offers you the chance to win “A VIP night of betting up to 10,000 dollars!”
I couldn’t help but laugh at the “night of betting” part, because really, even if you’re using their money, you could win jack shit. What’s even more of a crock is that the game is obviously just a tool to get people out to the physical track and give people that feeling that they have nothing to lose by not requiring any monetary involvement to play the game. I found this quote on the site:
“We’ve got videos, stories, and a pretty sweet racing game that could win you 10,000 DOLLARS…and hey, you might even learn something new.”

That last part is the thing that bothers me the most. It’s almost like they’re going to seduce you in with promises of grandeur without explaining any of the risks involved. It’s kind of deplorable, but if you have no hope in the first place (who wants to lose money for fun) why would you believe you have anything less than a shot?
